Claude Edwards was born in 1937 in Scott, Mississippi, and raised in Greenville, where his parents, Jesse and Rheatta Edwards (Deceased), and many of their eleven children, labored in the cotton fields of the segregated South that helped build this nation’s wealth. From that soil, Claude learned discipline, endurance, and the dignity of hard work—lessons that shaped his life.
As a young man, Claude enlisted in the United States Army, beginning more than 23 years of honorable service. Rising to First Sergeant (E-8) and known as “Top” by his men, Maryland, Virginia, Georgia, Vietnam, and Germany were among his deployments. His military decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal (7th Award)—reflecting decades of steady leadership and character.
Claude returned to Fort Richardson for his second deployment to Alaska, making it his final duty station and home for his family. Following five years with the United States Postal Service, Claude operated Duraclean Master Services, becoming the owner of the company’s only Alaska franchise. For 30 years, he served homes and businesses with the same discipline he exercised in uniform. Reliable, easygoing, and committed to doing the job right, he retired at age 80.
A devoted member of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church since 1982, Claude was baptized by Pastor Alonzo B. Patterson (Retired). He faithfully served on the Usher Board with distinction and as security in the House of the Lord.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 64 years, Clementine Edwards, his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extended family, and a community shaped by his genuine warmth and care.
On February 13, 2026, Claude Edwards completed his earthly assignment at the age of 88 at Providence Hospital. As a soldier in our nation’s Army, he defended our flag and our democracy. As a soldier in the Lord’s Army, he endured. He finished his course.
We commend him to his rest—earthly and eternal—as a follower of Jesus Christ, his Savior. He served faithfully. He finished well.
